More about Bioidentical Hormones

The bioidentical hormones commonly used for hormone restoration or balancing are estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).  Bioidentical hormones are made from compounds extracted from soybeans or Mexican wild yam.  These compounds are then processed to create hormones that are identical on a molecular level to those the body makes.  Bioidentical estrogens and testosterone require a prescription and are available from regular pharmacies or as prepared by compounding pharmacists.  Compounded forms allow for customized dosing schedules and a wide array of delivery options, such as pellets, creams/gels, capsules, and lozenges.

It is the chemical structure of the hormone, not its source, that determines if a hormone is bioidentical or not.  Hormones available from pharmaceutical companies can be bioidentical or not, synthetic, or derived from a “natural” substance (such as from pregnant mare urine).  Pharmaceutical preparations are standardized, but are limited in dosage forms and combinations and contain additives, binders, adhesives, and/or preservatives which can cause side effects such as skin reactions, headaches, and digestive problems.
